Health-insurance requirement for the visa
Work Where You Vacation requires travel insurance with at least US$50,000 of cover. The QRP and permanent residence ask for medical examinations with an HIV test (QRP: no older than 3 months; residence: HIV, VDRL and TB tests) but no insurance policy is listed on the pages read.
Investment thresholds (residency and citizenship by investment)
Temporary residence (one year, renewable) is open to people who show investments in Belize worth at least BZ$500,000 (US$250,000). On 2 Oct 2026 the immigration minister proposed a new investor permit leading to permanent residence after 2.5 years with one year's presence; it is not yet law. QRP members who run a business need BZ$1 million of capital and five Belizean employees.
Processing time and validity
Work permits: the Labour Department calls about the application within 30 days, and permits run up to one year depending on the category. Temporary residence is valid one year and renewed yearly. The QRP card is renewed every year (US$25). Work Where You Vacation allows up to 180 days. A citizenship interview is set within two weeks of applying.
Path to permanent residence (years)
Permanent residence after one year in Belize: the passport must show an arrival at least a year before applying, and the minister told the House in Oct 2026 that applicants must be physically present 351 days of that year. Fees (BZ$): US citizens 4,000; UK, Canada and other Commonwealth 3,000; European 6,000; minors half. Temporary residence costs one-fifth.
Citizenship / naturalisation timeline
Citizenship by registration after five years as a permanent resident, living continuously in Belize (no more than 30 consecutive days, or three months in total in any 12, abroad), or after one year of marriage to a Belizean plus a year living in Belize. An interview follows within two weeks; the fee is BZ$300 on approval. Guatemalan nationals do not qualify by registration.
Dual citizenship allowed
The Act's bar on dual nationals (s.26) covers citizens of countries that do not recognise Belize. The Constitution lets Belizeans by birth or descent keep their citizenship if they take another (s.27). Applicants show all passports held since gaining residence. A 2020 form note still says other citizenships must be renounced; confirm with the Nationality Department.
Citizenship by descent / marriage
By descent: a child born abroad to a Belizean mother or father is a citizen (s.5(2)); people born abroad before 21 Sep 1981 with a Belizean grandparent also qualify. By marriage: a foreign spouse of a Belizean can register after one year of marriage and a year living in Belize. The descent fee is BZ$40.
Short-stay rules (e.g. Schengen 90/180)
US citizens need no visa for stays of 30 days or less; a passport book, an onward or return ticket and enough funds are required. Longer stays are extended at an immigration office for US$100 (BZ$200) a month, up to six months. Visitors on an extension may not work, paid or unpaid.

Foreign ownership allowed / restrictions
Foreigners may own land: the Aliens Landholding Act was repealed in 2001. Non-Belizeans pay 8% stamp duty on land transfers against 5% for Belizeans and CARICOM nationals, and transfers between residents and non-residents need exchange-control permission. QRP members may buy land or a home for residential use.
Buying process for foreigners
Transfers are registered at the Land Registry on form RL1 (two copies) with the original land certificate (if issued) and, between residents and non-residents, exchange-control permission; stamp duty is payable on any sale, exchange or gift. The State Department warns of real-estate investment scams and advises legal and financial advice before buying.
Property purchase taxes and annual property tax
Stamp duty on land transfers: 5% of value above BZ$20,000 for Belizean and CARICOM nationals, 8% for everyone else. Land tax is 1% of the unimproved land value. Property tax is set by town and city councils (2.5% of assessed value in Belize City, 2% in Belmopan); San Pedro's rate was not read.
Buy-to-let rules; short-term rental licensing
Every short-term rental — villas and apartments included — must be registered with the Belize Tourism Board before it is advertised (Hotels and Tourist Accommodation Act); advertising an unregistered place is an offence.
