01Visas, residency & citizenship12
Visa types available (retirement / passive income, digital nomad, work, highly-skilled / EU Blue Card, student, family / spouse, investment / golden visa)
Main routes for Americans: a short-term residence permit (grounds include owning a home, tourism and investment); a student permit; a digital nomad certificate for remote workers of non-Turkish employers; a work permit; a family permit; a long-term permit after 8 years; citizenship by investment. A residence permit alone does not give the right to work.

Income / savings thresholds per visa
Tourism permit: income of at least 1.5 times the net minimum wage for one person (about 42,113 TL a month in 2026), shown for the last 3 months. Family permit: sponsor income of one-third of the minimum wage per family member, at least the minimum wage in total. Digital nomad certificate: US$3,000 a month or US$36,000 a year.

Health-insurance requirement for the visa
Every short-term residence application needs valid health insurance covering the whole permit period: Turkish social security (SGK) cover, an application to join general health insurance (GSS), or a private policy. The law bars visas to people without health insurance for their stay, and family permits need insurance for every family member.

Investment thresholds (residency and citizenship by investment)
Residence: owning a home worth at least US$200,000 at purchase (in TL) qualifies for a short-term permit; the home must be lived in, not let. Citizenship: property of at least US$400,000 held for 3 years, or US$500,000 of fixed capital, or US$500,000 in bank deposits, government bonds or fund shares held 3 years, or creating 50 jobs.

Processing time and validity
Short-term permits last up to 2 years each time; investor permits up to 5 years; family permits up to 3 years and never beyond the sponsor's permit. Long-term permits are indefinite. A first work permit lasts up to 1 year, then 2, then 3. Appointments are free at e-ikamet; no official processing time was found.

Path to permanent residence (years)
Long-term residence is available after at least 8 years of continuous residence on permits, with no social assistance in the last 3 years, sufficient regular income, valid health insurance and no public-order threat. Long-term permits are issued indefinitely, so no extension is needed.

Citizenship / naturalisation timeline
Naturalisation: 5 years of uninterrupted residence before applying, intent to settle, good morals, enough spoken Turkish, income to support the family and no security obstacle; meeting the conditions gives no absolute right. Spouses may apply after 3 years of marriage while still married and living together. Investors can be naturalised by Presidential decision.

Dual citizenship allowed
Yes — the Citizenship Law sets no renunciation condition for naturalisation, and Turks who take another nationality are recorded as holding multiple nationality. The US State Department notes that Turkish law may treat US-Turkish dual nationals as Turkish, and male dual nationals over 18 may have to do military service.

First steps: register the address with the population directorate within 20 working days of a first permit (permits of 90 days or more); get a tax number from a tax office or online with a passport (needed to open a bank account); set up an e-notification (UETS) address for permit extensions.
