01Visas, residency & citizenship12
Visa types available (retirement / passive income, digital nomad, work, highly-skilled / EU Blue Card, student, family / spouse, investment / golden visa)
Residence visas: work (employer-sponsored), family, student, Green visa (skilled workers, freelancers, investors; 5 years, no sponsor), Golden visa (investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, top students; 5 or 10 years), retirement visa and a virtual work (remote) visa. Visitors: 30-day visa on arrival for US citizens (see 1010) or a 5-year multi-entry tourist visa.
Income / savings thresholds per visa
Virtual work (remote) visa: salary of at least US$3,500 a month from an employer outside the UAE, plus health insurance. Retirement visa (5 years): age 55+, 15 years' work, and either AED 1 million in property plus AED 1 million in savings, or AED 180,000 a year income (AED 240,000 to apply in Dubai). Sponsoring family: salary of AED 4,000 a month (or AED 3,000 plus housing).
Health-insurance requirement for the visa
The virtual work visa requires a copy of health insurance and a medical fitness test. Sponsored family members aged 18+ must pass medical fitness tests at approved UAE centres. Insurance rules for other visas were not read.
Investment thresholds (residency and citizenship by investment)
Golden visa for investors: at least AED 2 million in property or public investments (5 years for real estate, 10 years for public investments), or an establishment paying at least AED 250,000 a year in taxes. Since 2021 investors can also be nominated for citizenship (see 1007).
Processing time and validity
Golden visa 5 or 10 years and Green visa 5 years, both renewable; retirement visa 5 years. Family members' permits depend on the sponsor's; if the sponsor's visa ends they get a 6-month grace period. Processing times were not read.
Path to permanent residence (years)
There is no permanent residence status: long-term stays rely on renewable 5- or 10-year visas (Golden, Green, retirement). Golden visa holders need no sponsor and can stay abroad longer than the usual six months without losing their visa.
Citizenship / naturalisation timeline
Since 2021, citizenship can be granted to selected investors, doctors, scientists, inventors and other talents (and their families) by nomination from the Rulers' Courts, Executive Councils or the Cabinet; investors must own UAE property. Other routes (long residence, marriage) were not read on an official page.
Dual citizenship allowed
Generally no: the US State Dept says the UAE does not recognise dual nationality and recognises only the passport a person enters on. Since 2021, people granted citizenship by nomination may keep their current nationality (WAM).

Citizenship by descent / marriage

Since 2021, property-owning investors, doctors, scientists, inventors and artists, with families, can be nominated for citizenship by the Rulers' Courts, executive councils or Cabinet and keep their nationality (Dubai Media Office).
Short-stay rules (e.g. Schengen 90/180)
US citizens get a free visitor visa on arrival, valid 30 days; an extension is at immigration officials' discretion. Passport valid at least 6 months beyond entry.

First registrations (tax number, residence registration)
Residence-visa applicants aged 18+ must pass a medical test and a security check and apply for an Emirates ID (Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship). To connect electricity and water in Dubai, DEWA needs a registered Ejari tenancy number (not required in free zones). The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals (u.ae).
Entry restrictions (e.g. HIV restrictions)
US advisory: Level 3, reconsider travel (29 Aug 2026), due to terrorism and armed conflict: since US–Iran hostilities began on 28 Feb 2026 there is a threat of Iranian drone and missile attacks and major flight disruption. Tenant rights
Dubai tenancy contracts must be registered in Ejari. To change terms, give at least 90 days' notice before the contract ends. Eviction at the end of a lease for sale or own use needs 12 months' notice by notary or registered post. Rent rises at renewal are capped from 0% to 20% depending on how far the rent is below the area average (Decree 43/2013). Deposits are refundable.

Accredited consultancy offices can issue Emirati private-villa permits without prior municipal review.
Selling property; capital gains tax
No tax on an individual's gain from selling a home: the UAE does not tax individuals' income, and individuals' real estate investment income is outside corporate tax whatever its size (Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023). Holders can sponsor family and stay abroad over six months.

How the health system works; access for residents
Care is mainly through insurance. In Dubai, employers must insure their employees and sponsors must insure resident dependants; since 2025 a policy is needed to issue or renew a private-sector worker's residence permit. Dubai's government scheme (Enaya) covers only Dubai citizens and government staff. Patients pay about a tenth of health spending out of pocket (9.7%, 2023).
